Near-Fest Jam XXII
« on: September 19, 2017, 05:11:06 PM »
Hello all you Festering jammers out there.
Bri here, your Junta Sector Leader bringing you the Jam News for the XXII. (For the Roman numerically challenged that means 22)
Wow? 11 years and 22 Near-Fest?s!!
First off lets give the Near-Fest crew a big hand for all the behind scene work they do so all can have a great time.
Many nearly invisible people work long thankless hours so we can kick back and have a great time.

General Info:
The Jam will start between 7:00 and 8:00pm on Friday night.
Ben and his family will be bringing the P.A. system. Without Ben the sound at the jam would not be pleasurable at all. Give him a big wet kiss on the lips when you see him!
PA Setup and Breakdown: All players need to help with PA setup, breakdown or hopefully both. So be at the Entertainment building early.
We?re all getting older and to put all that work on the shoulders of the few is a dick move and won?t be tolerated.
If you won?t help set or break you will NOT be allowed to play in the future.

End time: When we want it to end or the crowd gets angry and throws us out. Could be 10:30pm, could be 2am.

Play Time: Generally a few people will play a few tunes and then sit out while someone else plays. If there's a hole (bass player, drummer, lead bassoon, etc) You may be asked to to stay up. Please sit out every now and then and give other players some play time. You will be told to sit out if your bogartin'. If you don?t know the song at all please try to sit out and let it work.

Format: There ain?t one. Many people like to play stuff from the 60?s to 2000. (Sorry I just haven?t heard anything new in a long time) Mostly Klassic rock, not a lot of Blooze. A few bring their own tunes they?ve written and you are more than welcome to bring your?s. I would like it to be more of a jam so if you got a few progressions and maybe the chords and breaks in the songs?. on paper..Bring it!

There is no storage for equipment in the Entertainment building before or after the jam! You bring your stuff in before it starts and drag it out when it ends or when you leave. The building needs to be put back in order for the next day?s events and locked.

What you should bring (If your playing) and what you may want to leave at home.
Bring your own instrument, small amp, power strip, and stand unless you've made plans to borrow from someone else.
On the subject of amps. It's not a big space; 5-30 watt amps will fill the place and cause ears to bleed. So leave the  Peavy 5150 at home. we want to hear all the players. If you sing, bring your own mic, mic stand. A sheet music stand is always helpful for lyrics, music and dirty pics of the band.

Also, bring a little extra stuff in case a fellow musician forgot. Like instrument cables, picks, capo, guitar strings, power strips, 9volt and AA batteries, etc.
Please let the forum know if your coming, what you play and what your bringing so we can work logistics. 16 cowbells and no sticks to hit them with is just wrong.

Bring several copies of lyrics/chord sheets  in big fonts of songs you want to play.
I'll be adding info as it comes in.
Thanks and hope to see you all at the jam.

Sure as long as we play it under water.

Hey Adam V, Can you make and bring one of these but have it play Renegade by Styx?

Unfortunately, I'm short a couple dozen floppy drives at the moment. I should be able to manage vocals on Renegade played the usual way, at the least... ;)

Anyhoo, I should be able to make it to the Jam with my (un)usual accoutrement of goofy keyboard instruments. I'm also willing to help with set-up to the best of my abilities, as usual. See ya's there!

I'll be there.

I've been pretty darn distracted lately, so haven't chimed in.  :o

Any song requests? I haven't practiced anything yet.
I have ideas, but not sure if anyone would want to put the effort into learning them.

Well I'm glad to hear Ben, Adam and John are coming.
Anyone else gonna be there?

Not sure this is the place to post this but... here goes.
Recently we lost our dog, so we got another one from a shelter who's owner passed away recently.

Well the pooch is pretty well behaved. Sure she needs some corrections and we're doing our best to gently persuade her.
One thing she does that I've never experienced before with my other dogs is: About every week or so she has a Klingon.
What is a Klingon you ask ? Well it's when a poop comes out and it's hanging by a string, thread, sock, rope, plastic bag, choose your own item ..... You now have a mental image that won't go away anytime soon.
Well now for about a week and a half things were going pretty well. No Klingers! We adjusted her diet to include oatmeal and it seemed to be working...............Until today.

We're out for our afternoon constitutional walk and she decides to poop (of course while a neighbor is coming out of his house).
No problem except he wants to talk and were shooting the breeze and all of a sudden I look down and the dog is in a permanent poop pose. It's like Madonna was striking a "Vouge pose"
I ignore and go back to the conversation, however I notice the dog is "vougeing" while she is walking!
Now I see why she's Vougeing. An offending poop Klingon is hanging off her butt. What can a mere mortal man do to help? Not a freaking thing as far as I'm concerned. The neighbor is still talking and I'm trying to keep engauged in the conversation but my dog and I are now squaring off in a dance.

Well she's completely bugged by now from her own Klingon and then she's decides to trying to SIT ON MY SHOE TO WIPE IT OFF!!!!
I'm like W.T.F.!!!! AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN! We're going around in circles (during the conversation of course) while I'm trying to keep my feet away from butt.
The dog looks frantic. Her eyes say "GET IT OFF ME" My whole body says "YOUR ON YOUR OWN"

Thank the Good Lord for dog harnesses and leashes.
I just lifted her out of harms (shoe) way and brought her over to another neighbor's lawn (who we don't like much) so she could wipe her dirty sinful business on their lawn.

I'm just gonna say: Be wary of rescue dogs.

Bri

Can I get a what, huh, why?

You could probably write a song about that! Actually, from my dealing with shelters up here in the Portland, Maine area they seem to go over the animals pretty good. They are gone over by a vet before they're given the green light to put up for adoption. Even the Granite State Sheltie Rescue did a complete work over on the dog we eventually got. He came from that mess of a puppy mill in Buxton, Maine that was raided/shut down 10 years ago. The only one we had a problem with, we took from an owner that pretty much let him fend for himself. He came with a tapeworm (easily fixed with meds).
Now the one I got as a puppy in May 2015 liked to try to ingest anything left on the floor. He still tries to this day! He also is a Sheltie, named Riley, after Riley that Carroll from Angelino's has.

So after making sure you dawgs don't bring Klingons to the gig  :o , I'll only (wish) for one official song:

Bobby Fuller Four - I Fought The Law
This Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ5v8L08Flg

I already know the bass line, but could attempt to learn the guitar line if there are too many excuses not to.
You gotta let me know.

If anyone has other songs, you gotta chime in now so I and others have time to work on them. We're near the cutoff time.

Soooo, Hooz gunna be there?

I'm bringing my ugly misfit guitar to play.
I challenge all to bring something uglier (No spouses, siblings or significant others, only musical instruments)

Bri,
Glad you are feeling better. I hope you bring the Klingon dog - I might leave the expensive pedals at home just in case.
I'll be there. My back is still messed up so I will probably leave the Les Paul and heavy homebrew amp at home and bring lighter stuff. I will probably have a few amps for sale so if someone needs to borrow one I will have one available.
See you all there.

The McGrath brothers from Vermont will be there.

Rick, please bring your awesome e-kit, and I will try to remember my headphones.
It will be good to see everyone.  I don't think Raj is coming this time.

-Bill (and Scott)

PS - I finally got myself registered on the forums so I can post instead of just lurking.  Thanks to everyone (especially Brian) for pulling this together.

*pokes his head out from the fallout shelter*

Wow, what a show! ;D Thanks to Bri, Ben, and everyone else involved with the shindig, not to mention everyone in the audience who put up with my singing and keyboard-playing. I think it went pretty well overall. Bri, I can all but guarantee that I'll have an axe to bring to the next gig which is uglier than yours, in at least one way..........  ;)
