On grounds personal transportation restrictions?
« on: April 28, 2008, 10:20:46 AM »
"Hosstraders" prohibited the use of any gasoline vehicles for personal transportation (with the exception of their own filty 2cycle golf carts).  The only other mode allowed was electric.  I haven't seen any other posts regarding this... Is this going to be the policy here as well or are we going to loosen up a bit and allow people to buzz around in whatever they want (within safety and reason)?

Regretfully the same prohibitions apply at NEAR-Fest.  Due to insurance requirements "personal transportation" is restricted to the following:  staff members in the performance of their duties and those with a "demonstratable medical or physical requirement".  This applies to but not restricted to automobiles, golf carts, bicycles, skateboards, etc.

I actually saw an older gent get run into by a kid on one of those 2 wheeled push scooters last fall. It never should have happened, fortunately no one was seriously injured.

We also had one individual cruising the grounds Friday in a GMC suburban, blocking pedestrian traffic and endangering folks while he 'shopped' from the driver's seat. He was instructed in very clear terms to 'park it or leave'.

Keep in mind that this is a public event for all, not a personal event for any of us. Therefore, personal transportation, personal preferences, etc, are not considerations beyond medical requirements.

Our Sgt at Arms will be keeping an eye out for these infractions along with the rest of us. There is never a deal worth running into or over someone to get.

Besides, exercise is a good thing and more of a requirement as we age. We want folks coming to Near-Fest for decades to come. :)
