95.1FM The Pirate Ship @ NearFest V
« on: February 04, 2009, 10:28:04 AM »
It's that time of year again - to get ready for the spring Fester.  As always, Adam, myself, and some Guest D.J.s will be spinning some vinyl on a radio near you this Spring Fester.  This time we will go totally open format (with the exception of the scheduled Jam) and we encourage anyone interested to join us and broadcast their own show.  Last time we had DJ Frederick as our guest and he featured a rather interesting selection of music on his show.  Adam and I are looking forward to knowing if DJ Frederick would be willing to host his show again and maybe even do a longer program featuring more of his music.  How about it?

Of course, if you have a show you'd like to feature on the station, please let us know, we'd be delighted to air you and carry your unique signature program.  Just respond to this thread.  The Pirate Ship will be on it's usual frequency of 95.1FM and in stereo as usual.  We will also be carrying the Ham Jam session and broadcasting it with a live feed from the entertainment building for those who wish to listen in from their RVs/Tents, or while mobiling around the town of Deerfield.  The guys doing the Ham Jam are preparing for an even better, more organized performance this time around so we will definitely be treated to a good show!  Provided we can get 2 microphones dedicated to pickup the Jam, we might even be able to air the Jam in stereo!

Of course, we will also still fit in some "Old Time Radio" from radio's golden age, so there's lots of stuff we will have in store.

We will begin broadcasting at 4PM on Thursday evening for the early bird arrivals and entertain you all through the night with some great open album oriented rock and we might even have a request line open as well.  So if you're arriving Thursday night, tune us in as well, and we'll also carry important information about the Fester as well.

Lastly, as has become our tradition for the Fester opener, we will air the Roger Waters "Radio K.A.O.S." album, the first track "Radio Waves" signaling and kicking off the official opening of the fester gates!  Be sure to keep your FM dial on 95.1FM for any important information prior to the Opening, and throughout your stay at NearFest for the very latest information and entertainment news.

We also suggest carrying a small shirt pocket transistor broadcast receiver with you while you attend the fest so that you will hear all important announcements and prize drawings wherever you may be throughout your stay!  All official information will be passed to our team by the Management and we'll be carrying it live as it happens.  We will also take announcement requests from food/commercial vendors about their products as well, so you don't want to miss out on any special deals that may be going on!  We've heard that many people can't hear the PA horns much beyond the Grove.  Having a small transistor radio in your pocket or boom box at your site/camp will greatly enhance your ability to stay informed and hear prize drawings.

See you all in May!  ;D

Hey Guys,

Great Job as always. I come by each and every time!

I'd like a show. 1 hour, 2 hours, late night Friday?

I have tons of 'vintage' indie rock/pop from the late 70's through 2009, some 'demented' novelty songs mixed in for fun. I've done college-pirate radio for 5 years. Clean and kid-friendly for the most part! I play 4 or 5 songs then break with a voice playlist, along with some background on the next artist, then rinse and repeat!

Hope to get a slot, cheers.

Oops, don't want to coincide with "The Jam", that is, and should be, broadcast live. So before the jam, is preferable!  :)

Tim,

Thanks for expressing interest in doing a program.  Currently, we have many slots open.  The only portion of the broadcast that is scheduled, is the Ham Jam on Friday night, which we'll be carrying live from the entertainment building via microwave link to our systems at the Grove Stage.

They usually start the Jam at 8PM and that generally continues until midnight - 2AM.  They can also end up going later if the guys are holding up well.  We usually break away from the Jam at 11PM for an Old Time Radio hour from 11 - Midnight.

There is a one hour slot open from Midnight to 1AM (after 1AM we switch the station on autopilot & resume live programming at 7AM for the morning show which carries the daily news and upcoming Fest info/specials for Saturday).

You are free to select any other time you wish, and there will be other guest hosts as well.  Be sure to bring your own media...   we have equipment for playing MP3 files, & Vinyl only.  At this time we do not have a stand-alone CD player, but if you have one and you have an audio patch cable for it, we can plug it into the console for your show.

As far as your show goes, you are free to play just about anything you want.  You are also free to air any adult oriented material for mature audiences if you select the Midnight show.

Let us know if you have any questions, we'll help in any way we can.

See you at the fest!

Good News: D.J. Frederick will be airing his program (which we received a lot of good feedback on last fall) this May.  We're not sure what time slots he'll take, but considering this time we're open format, you might catch him on the air several times during the fest with his unique selection of music and artist info.

Hi There......former New England radio legend Gary Francis (W1GFF) here.  For the past 19 years I have hosted a live outdoor recreation of a 1960's radio show at Salisbury Beach every Saturday night June - September called "The Saturday Night Sock Hop".     Hits of the 50's, 60's, 70's....complete with a resing of the famous Drake Jingles "More Music........"     Obviously Sat nite won't work (since Nearfest is over by then) but if you have an hour or 2 available Friday (I'll be there anyway)...Just let me know - I'll bring the laptop - all 8,000 songs and jingles and old 60's commercials are on it......along with the OtsDJ software I use

My radio career included stops at:  WRKO (rock and talk eras both)
WBZ (talk era)
Oldies-99    WNNH     Mid-day jock and production director
WLLH     Morning show fill-in host and dj
WCAP    News Director, Talk Show Host, Overnight Music (voice tracked host), Image Voice, Engineer (1996 - 2008)
and for many years......one of the voices of the New England Dragway Commercials....("SUNDAY!!!!!!!..............)

Gary,

Sure, please do stop by.  We're open format this time around so whatever you want to do.  The only thing we have to ask is that you refrain from playing any jingles that may contain the call letters of any other station - other than that, it's your barbecue.

Saturday is tough, though we do have a couple morning spots available.

Friday, there are a couple confirmed guests, but times haven't yet been worked out.  We're going to play it by ear and wing it.  Just show up with your stuff and Adam, who will be managing the station will work with you to get your show on.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Regards,

NOTE TO ALL GUEST DJs:

Please bring and use your own headphones.  We will not have any loaners.  Your headphones should come equipped with a 1/4" stereo plug, or if your headphones come equipped with a 1/8" stereo plug, make sure you provide your own adaptor.

You must have & use headphones during your broadcast, so that you can ensure your program and on-air voice is heard in the final on air product.

Please do not forget your headphones!

None of my jingles have call letters....they were all custom sings for me.....instead of the call letters either my name or the shows name (Saturday Night Sock Hop) is sung where the call signs normally would be.  I'll be there on Friday.

Hey Everyone,
Information update:  We WILL have a single CD player available, and the Ham-Jam WILL be broadcast in stereo!! To the person who is bringing a laptop, don't forget the proper cable to hook up to our board.  I'm guessing an 1/8 inch stereo plug to stereo RCA plugs?  I'm going to have a small boom-box or set of speakers on the stage with us so we can monitor what we're doing without having to be constantly chained to our cans.  Let's all have fun with this!  Other than the Jam and our own opening song; everything else is wide open, which means if you wanta spin, all you have to do is show up at the relaxation stage with your music!  I'm not going to impose time limits per se, but John and I would like SOME time to spin! ;D

That sounds fine, as long as you're on before 8pm cuz that's when we start airing the jam.  If that isn't possible, you can jump in at some point on Saturday.

Hey guys - just to let you know...

I'm the guy that brought the "sound stuff" for the Ham Jam last year, and I'm doing it again this year, this time bringing about twice as much equipment. Hopefully we can find enough plugs!

If you must use microphones, you can do that. I will have extras available if needed, but I had planned to give you a feed from the mixer and have been in conversation with several of the Jam guys to make sure we get everything "on the wire" so to speak so it can make it to you (as well as our local audience), in stereo of course!

The output from the mixer is either balanced (TRS) 1/4"jacks or I have a recorder output that can be used also with unbalanced RCA jacks. I would prefer to use the balanced lines if possible, but we can see what will work at the time. I am planning to bring two mixers, but I will throw in an older unit I have that can serve as an interface and master audio level control for the feed to your microwave input if necessary. Let me know what inputs you need and will work best for you and I'll make sure to bring the right stuff.

Anyway, we'll see you there!

PS - Nice to see Gary Francis on here! You don't know me Gary, and I don't know a whole lot about you, but I have heard a lot about your activities in the past. OtsDJ huh?  Funny, that's what I have too, actually OtsAV Pro now...three copies.

"Twice as much equipment"?!  I'm not sure what this means, but John and I are planning on miking the band in stereo using our own gear with the setup we used last year.  We definitely need to watch those volume levels on that PA no matter what gear is used, as it was JUST TOO LOUD last time.  Some of us musicians couldn't hear each other the last time, plus we ARE going to have an acoustic drum set this time around.  I'm sure I don't need to tell anyone how loud THAT is going to be.  Lets just be more discreet with the PA this time, and John and I will handle the sound for the broadcast feed.

On behalf of John and myself, I'd just like to say that we had a great NEARFest V; we worked hard but I truly believe we achieved what we came to do.  Especially after we woke up at 3:45 am this morning and discovered that ALL the gear on the stage was wet, and we were pretty positive that there was not going to be a broadcast today.  But our ingenius friend Tom and his resourcefullness saved the day, and we were back on the air at around 9:30 this morning.  We gave away a whole ton of prizes, and I'd like to think everyone went home happy.  I know we did!  Many many many thanks to Mr. Mike and the rest of the NEARFest management for all their support, and our helpers Tom, Ken, and John 'DJ Nebula' for everything they contributed; large and small.  We could not have pulled this off without them.
SEE Y'ALL IN OCTOBER!!
